Continuing education is essential in every field, including property management, asphalt paving and concrete work. This course will provide students with an understanding of ADA that will allow them to recognize a legally compliant disabled parking stall and signage, understand what is an accessible route and path of travel. They will learn how ramps, slopes and grades differ and when detectable warning surfaces are to be installed.
Finally, the students will learn how the new ADA laws that went into effect on March 15, 2012 changed and how those changes may affect their properties.
The course will delve in the basics of asphalt manufacturing, asphalt pavement components, design, life expectancy, types and reasons for failure, types of temporary and permanent fixes, and pro-active maintenance methods. Students will walk away with a better understanding of asphalt as a paving material, how to make sound decisions regarding repair to a parking lot or driveway, methods to extend the usable life of a parking lot or driveway as well as how to accurately diagnose failures and their causes.
The course will cover the essentials of concrete pavements, from the production of Portland cement to the elements of proper finishing techniques and all points in between. The students will be exposed to all things concrete including new technologies in additives and reinforcement as well as the debunking of multiple myths about the ancient construction material. Students will walk away with a better understanding of concrete as a paving material, when to specify concrete paving, methods to extend the usable life of a parking lot or driveway as well as best application for concrete versus asphalt.
